Membership: Overview

The Enterprise Privacy Group is an association of organisations working in partnership to understand privacy-related issues and to achieve collaborative solutions.

The rapid evolution of information systems is casting a spotlight both on the privacy of personal data and on those responsible for safeguarding it.

Any information that can be linked either directly or indirectly to an individual might be deemed &h145;private’. Yet many organisations have a limited understanding of the necessity and implications of good privacy management. Organisations often fail to recognise the risks that can arise from poor privacy practices.

The current emphasis on faultless corporate governance, a heightened public awareness of privacy issues and a growing culture of litigation, are all contributing to a very real need for private and public sector organisations to understand and implement the privacy requirements now being placed upon them. However, the proliferation of conflicting and evolving legislation around the world, the few resources available to assist organisations in their implementation of privacy controls, and the emergence of new technologies each underline the complexity of the task.

The Enterprise Privacy Group has been created specifically to address the many issues confronting privacy professionals. Private companies and government departments will join the Group to collaborate on the development of solutions for their privacy, data protection and freedom of information concerns. In return for a single annual subscription, organisations have free access to a broad range of workshops, training courses, practical research and an annual conference.

The Enterprise Privacy Group’s activities are reviewed by an Advisory Group that includes The British Computer Society, The London School of Economics Department of Information Systems and legal firm Olswang.

In addition, the Information Commissioner’s Office has taken up Observer status: the Commissioner’s staff can attend Enterprise Privacy Group meetings to contribute their expertise to discussions/initiatives and to explain the latest initiatives and news from their office.

EPG's activities are conducted within the terms of a membership framework that has been agreed with the Members and Advisory Group.
