Identity and Passport Service Workshop - 30th June 2008

On the 6th March, the Home Secretary published the National Identity Scheme Delivery Plan 2008. This plan introduces the first Identity Cards for UK citizens in 2009. As part of the overall consultations on the Delivery Plan, the Identity and Passport Service has invited the Enterprise Privacy Group to convene and facilitate a series of workshops to explore key aspects of privacy, security and usability in the National Identity Scheme.

The workshop on 30th June will explore stakeholder understanding and expectations of the National Identity Scheme.

The workshop, which will be held under the Chatham House rule, will bring together a broad range of views and expertise from diverse stakeholder groups. Please note that the event on 30th June will be held at the Institute of Directors, 116 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5ED. Coffee will be available from 10:00am, and the event will commence at 10:30am. We will aim to finish by 4:00pm. Please note that the dress code is business or business casual, and the IoD enforces a code of no t-shirts, jeans or trainers.

Annual Members Forum - Call for Papers

EPG is holding its Annual Members Forum on 7th-8th October 2008. Judging by last year's event the Forum represents one of the best gatherings of privacy savvy people in the UK.

Members and guests are invited to contribute to this year's Forum by making a presentation or running a workshop session. Those who do so will be eligible for free seats at the event, which includes access to both days of the Forum, meals and refreshments. Effectively a speaker will 'earn' an extra place at the Forum for his or her organisation.

Alan Stanley appointed as Membership Director

Alan Stanley has been appointed as Membership Director for EPG. As you may know Alan has been involved with EPG for several years. In his new position, Alan will be responsible for overall management of EPG on behalf of the Members, and as such will work as their advocate to ensure that their needs are represented to and fulfilled by the EPG management team.

Alan brings a wealth of experience to the Management Team, both regarding information security and in the running of a Forum. Alan was Managing Director of the Information Security Forum (ISF) for many years. In that role he established the ISF as a well respected body in the field of information security and grew it to a membership of over 250 organisations.

Roger Hartley Appointed as EPG Special Advisor

The Enterprise Privacy Group is delighted to announce the appointment of Roger Hartley as a Special Advisor to the Group.

Roger Hartley is an independent consultant. He worked as a civil servant for many years in the area of Information Rights, in the Home Office, Lord Chancellor's Department, The Department for Constitutional Affairs,and the Ministry of Justice. He was the Secretary of the National Security Panel of the Information Tribunal when it heard the appeal of Norman Baker MP, and was the lead negotiator for the UK in Brussels for the Data Protection Framework Decision during and after the UK Presidency (2005-06).

Roger subsequently lead a team in the Freedom of Information Central Clearing House, with responsibility for providing advice on sensitive requests for information made to Government Departments & where he also had responsibility for liaising with the Information Commissioner's Office. Roger was also involved in the early stages of the Government's Data Sharing programme. He has a long standing interest in privacy issues, and the robustness of Information Law in the rapidly evolving context of the Information Society.
